Where does the Golden Teacher name come from?

What is the difference between a liquid culture and a spore syringe?
A spore syringe carries spores suspended in solution. Spores are genetically varied and have to germinate before any mycelium exists, so what develops can differ from sample to sample. A liquid culture contains living mycelium from a single isolated genetic line that has already been grown out, so you are working with a known, consistent expression from the start and there is no germination stage. How long will my liquid culture stay viable, and how should I store it?
We recommend using your culture within 3 months of receipt for best results. Stored correctly it will remain viable for up to 12 months without issue. Keep it refrigerated between 33-40°F and never allow it to freeze. Most cultures survive a single freeze-thaw cycle, but repeated freeze-thaw cycles will kill live mycelium.

What is True Albino Teacher, and how does it relate to Golden Teacher?
True Albino Teacher, usually shortened to TAT, is the albino selection taken from Teacher genetics. It carries the same underlying line with the pigment expression removed, giving pale to near-white caps in place of the golden ones. Our Yeti and Ghost cultures are both isolations from that TAT material, which makes them a natural pairing with GT for documenting how far a single trait can shift appearance.
How does Golden Teacher compare with Penis Envy?
They sit at opposite ends of the cubensis range. GT opens fully, drops heavy dark prints and is widely described as forgiving. PE keeps its cap compact, produces very few spores and is generally considered finicky. Published population genomics found both to be narrow, heavily inbred lines, so the visible gulf between them comes down to a small number of expressed traits rather than broad genetic distance.
What do Golden Teacher spores look like under the microscope?
Typical of the species and unusually consistent, which is exactly why GT became the reference specimen. Spores run roughly 11 to 17 micrometers long by 7 to 12 wide, with most populations clustering near 12 to 13 by 8. They are subellipsoid, smooth-walled, dark purple-brown in transmitted light, and carry the truncate germ pore that resolves cleanly at 1000x oil immersion. Documented Origin & Disputed History
For a line this widely grown, Golden Teacher has a remarkably thin origin record. No isolator is credited, no collection site is confirmed, and no founding print is documented. What is generally agreed is that it entered circulation in the late 1980s and spread through mail-order and hobbyist networks in the years that followed. One of the earliest public references cited by strain historians is a classified advertisement in a 1991 issue of High Times, which places the name in print but says nothing about where the genetics came from.
The most repeated claim is a subtropical Florida or Gulf Coast collection, consistent with where P. cubensis occurs naturally in the United States. It is plausible and entirely unverified. The name itself is easier to account for: golden for the amber cap, teacher for the role the line has played for four decades as the specimen people learn on. We present the history as the community records it rather than as settled fact.
What the Peer-Reviewed Genetics Show
Golden Teacher is one of the cubensis cultivars examined in published population genomics. McTaggart and colleagues, writing in Current Biology in 2023, sequenced naturalized and cultivated populations and found GT among the least genetically diverse lines they measured: mean heterozygosity of 0.0008, an inbreeding coefficient (FIS) of 0.784, and an index of association of 0.5221, consistent with long-running clonal propagation and selfing. The GT population carried only 3 HD and 5 PR mating-type alleles, against 13 and 9 in naturalized Australian populations.
In plain language: the world’s most common cubensis line is also one of its narrowest. Decades of clean, repeatable results came at the cost of genetic diversity, which is what makes GT such a useful baseline. When a culture behaves predictably, it is because there is very little variation left in it to behave otherwise.
Why Golden Teacher Prints So Heavily
GT does everything a textbook cubensis is supposed to do. The veil tears cleanly, the cap expands to flat, the gill surface is fully exposed, and spores drop in quantity onto whatever sits beneath. Dense, dark purple-brown to near-black prints are the norm rather than the exception. That is the exact opposite of what happens in the PE family, where the cap stays closed and sporulation is restricted, and it is the practical reason GT became the strain people learn print-taking and slide work on.

I was unable to see these grow because I used this syringe on an all in one grow bag that happened to be contaminated before inoculation. One day after it was injected, the entire bag was covered in green mold. It was clear that this contamination couldn't have come from the syringe. The bag company never reimbursed me for the lost syringe.
Moral of the story: Stay away from Mushroom Supplies, they got dirty bags.
