Jedi Mind F*** (JMF) | Large-Form P. cubensis Genetics

A bold, oversized cubensis phenotype prized for standout morphology.

Jedi Mind F*** (JMF) is a well-known Psilocybe cubensis variety recognized in mycology circles for its typically robust stature and visually striking fruitbody form. Researchers and collectors often cite JMF for its tall growth tendency, rich brown-to-golden cap tones, and classic cubensis spore traits—making it a popular addition to comparative microscopy and taxonomy collections.

Genetic Lineage & Historical Context

  • Species: Psilocybe cubensis
  • Common abbreviation: JMF
  • Circulation notes: JMF is widely circulated in the hobbyist and microscopy community; the origin story is commonly attributed to “Myco Joe” with early circulation traced to Florida (often cited around 2009), though community accounts vary.

Because cultivar histories are often transmitted through community documentation and informal lineages, origin details can differ across sources. When in doubt, treat “JMF” as a recognizable phenotype label within P. cubensis rather than a formally standardized taxon.

Visual Characteristics (Macro Morphology)

  • Cap coloration: Commonly reported as golden-brown to chestnut-brown, sometimes deepening with maturity
  • Cap shape: Convex to broadly convex; many descriptions note a pronounced central bump (umbonate) on mature specimens
  • Stipe (stem): Frequently described as tall and sturdy with a classic cubensis profile
  • Veil remnants: Partial veil may leave an annular ring on the upper stipe (typical for P. cubensis)
  • Bruising: Blue oxidation upon handling or damage (common among psilocybin-producing taxa)

Microscopy & Taxonomy Notes

  • Spore print color: Dark purplish-brown (typical of P. cubensis)
  • Gill structure: Crowded gills are typical; attachment can range adnate to adnexed in many cubensis cultivars
  • Why JMF is studied: Collectors often select JMF for comparative morphology studies due to its “large-form” look and recognizable cap/stipe proportions described across multiple community sources

Research Notes (Educational Context)

Educational and descriptive context only.

  • Potency (reported): Frequently described in anecdotal literature as “strong” or “intense,” though potency can vary widely between individual specimens and across genetic lines
  • Common descriptive language: Many informal reports emphasize vivid visuals and a “heady” experience—language that reflects subjective accounts rather than standardized measurement
  • Analytical relevance: Like many named cubensis varieties, JMF is often discussed as a phenotype label; careful documentation is recommended when using it in comparative observation

Cultivation Characteristics (High-Level Overview)

  • Difficulty: Generally considered comparable to other P. cubensis varieties
  • Growth behavior: Often described as vigorous and “big-fruiting” in community notes
  • Observation value: Researchers commonly note the potential for large caps and tall stipes, which can be useful when comparing macro features across cubensis genetics

For safety and compliance, this section is descriptive only and excludes instructions, parameters, or cultivation techniques.

Collector & Researcher Highlights

  • Recognizable phenotype: Commonly associated with tall stature and umbonate, richly colored caps
  • Community popularity: A frequently requested cubensis variety for microscopy collections
  • Abbreviation: Commonly referred to as JMF

Why liquid culture over spores (for research):

  • Established genetics: derived from a stable, well-documented lineage

Important Notice:

Once home, cubensis cultures should be kept in a fridge between 33-40°F to maximize their lifespan of 6-12 months.
Do not let your cultures freeze! While most will survive one freeze-thaw cycle, multiple freeze-thaw cycles will kill any live mycelium.

I purchase the Blue Meanie and the JMF, and the Blue Meanie have been transplanted into Monotubs and doing GREAT, unfortunately the JMF is still colonizing at an incredibly slow rate and starting to get quite concerning.

JMF are so good. I was a little worried about growing them in the beginning. but every time they grow super fast and in very good abundance I think one or 2 of my tubes is on its fifth yield and still going. Yeah

Clean and strong live culture. I started seeing clean mycelium after only 4 days and the growth is rigorous and robust. Was able to inoculate 5 bags with only two of the three syringes (20cc) of culture and I still have a full syringe in the fridge left over for later. I took a picture for Chat GDP and it confirmed my observations. On top of that I have no special equipment. Im growing it in “ all in bags” no flow hood, no grow tent… simply a few bags on a book shelf. Great product, came within a few days, cool temp on arrival. Will go back to cube culture for all my future spores and clone the ones I have. Couldn’t be happier.
