Jack Frost | Albino Hybrid P. cubensis Genetics
Ice-white fruiting bodies. Steel-blue gills. A modern classic for comparative study.
Jack Frost is a striking modern Psilocybe cubensis hybrid celebrated for its snow-white caps and stems, dramatic blue bruising, and gills that can take on an unmistakable “frosted” steel-blue appearance at maturity. Developed through deliberate breeding and selection, Jack Frost has become a go-to specimen for collectors and microscopy enthusiasts who enjoy studying stable albino traits and unusual late-stage coloration.
Genetic Lineage & Historical Context
- Species: Psilocybe cubensis (family Hymenogastraceae)
- Lineage: Hybrid cross of True Albino Teacher (TAT) × Albino Penis Envy (APE)
- Credited breeder: “Wombat” / Dave Wombat (often referenced in the community as the developer who stabilized the Jack Frost line)
- Era of circulation: Reported to have entered wider circulation around 2018–2019
Jack Frost sits at the intersection of two highly influential modern albino lineages: TAT (noted for clean, stable albino phenotype) and APE (often cited in mycology circles for unusual morphology and strong bluing). In community genealogy discussions, TAT itself is commonly described as an albino isolation originating from unstable Golden Teacher genetics.
Visual Characteristics (Macro Morphology)
- Cap coloration: Pearly white to matte white; may develop a faint “frosted” or crystalline look
- Cap shape: Often convex when young, flattening with maturity; mature caps may show curled or upturned margins
- Stem: Chalky white, frequently thick/robust with a “frosted” appearance
- Gill coloration (notable trait): Gills can become bluish to steel-blue as the specimen matures, especially when handled or as bruising develops
- Veil remnants: Partial veil may leave an annular ring or remnants on the stipe (typical cubensis feature set)
- Bruising: Pronounced blue oxidation in response to handling or damage (a commonly cited hallmark of this variety)
Microscopy & Taxonomy Notes
- Spore print color (reference): Typically dark purplish-brown for P. cubensis; albino lines can sometimes show lighter-appearing deposition depending on phenotype and collection method
- Spore morphology (reference): Cubensis spores are generally sub-ellipsoid to ellipsoid
- Spore size (species-level reference): Often reported around ~11.5–17.3 × 8–11.5 µm for P. cubensis
- Gill structure (species-level): Crowded gills with adnate to adnexed attachment are typical of P. cubensis
- Why Jack Frost is favored for study: Distinctive albino pigmentation patterns and late-stage gill coloration make comparative ID practice especially engaging
Research Notes (Educational Context)
Educational and descriptive context only.
- Potency (reported): Anecdotal reports frequently describe Jack Frost as strong relative to many classic cubensis varieties, likely reflecting its APE/TAT heritage and the broader observation that some modern “novelty” cubensis lines can trend higher in measured alkaloid content than baseline varieties.
- Common descriptive language: Often described in community literature as “visual,” “introspective,” and “immersive.”
- Analytical relevance: Useful as a comparison point when evaluating phenotype-to-chemotype variability within P. cubensis (a topic increasingly discussed in modern strain diversity reviews).
Cultivation Characteristics (High-Level Overview)
- Difficulty (reported): Intermediate (albino/PE-influenced lines are often described as slower or more finicky than baseline cubensis)
- Growth behavior: Community reports commonly note dense, robust fruiting bodies and dramatic late-stage coloration
- Environmental tolerance: Varies by isolate; best treated as a phenotype-forward line where expression depends on genetics and conditions
For safety and compliance, this section is descriptive only and excludes instructions, parameters, or cultivation techniques.
Collector & Researcher Highlights
- Signature look: Snow-white caps and stems with vivid blue gills at maturity
- Modern lineage: Hybrid of two influential albino lines (TAT × APE) credited to Dave Wombat
- Abbreviation: Commonly referred to as JF (and sometimes JFR for “Jack Frost Revert” variants)
Why liquid culture over spores (for research):
- Established genetics: isolated from a well-known modern hybrid line (TAT × APE)
- Cleaner observation: minimal extraneous material for microscopy prep – Made in front of a scanned, 99.99% efficient HEPA filter
- Repeatable phenotype study: supports consistent comparative observation across samples
- Shelf Life: 9-12 Months (Refrigerated DO NOT FREEZE)

Add Jack Frost to your genetic library and study one of the most visually distinctive modern P. cubensis hybrids.
Important Notice:
Once home, cubensis cultures should be kept in a fridge between 33-40°F to maximize their lifespan of 6-12 months.
Do not let your cultures freeze! While most will survive one freeze-thaw cycle, multiple freeze-thaw cycles will kill any live mycelium.

I just ordered this strain so donƒ??t know how it will work yet but Iƒ??ve bought multiple other products from them and had a 100% success rate this company and there products are amazing with 0 contamination so if your on the fence hop to the other side and buy as much as you can!! It's looking pretty good so far. I got Burma going also thank you
Justin K. –
Great product completely contaminate free. Best prices all around and excellent customer service…don't miss out on any of their liquid cultures
David G. –
Great cultures . Every thing I bought from cube culture has been clean and spot on
Sarah T. –
I recently took the dive into Mushrooms, and my friend had recommended CubeCultireUsa for liquid culture syringes, I'm super glad I gave them a try, so far they've got the best prices, shipping was fast with no issues too. I haven't gotten any fruits yet but my grain jars seem to be doing great, just did some agar the other day as well. I'll definitely be ordering again. The selection might not be as big as other vendors, but they're very reliable, great prices, and great shipping.

Absolutely beautiful… my first albino strain. Harvest was bittersweet, bountiful but so stunning I felt guilty pulling them up. Placing another order now!
Mark P. –
I received a culture on the house which was totally unexpected and it was a strain I just inquired about. Price, quality and shipping speed are super on point. This hobby can get expensive and even heartbreaking from failed research.
Dylan –
If I could give this company 4 thumbs up I would. Beautiful specimen.
Elijah C. –
Originally I only ordered a b+ syringe. Opened my box with a bonus jack frost syringe. Lots of cloudy mycelium in them both. Jack frost is growing quite well also. Shipping was fast 2 days I received my package.
Garrett K. –
Awesome will continue to do business fast and on point good study material A+++ company
Leonard W. –
I very please with my purchase especially how fast my order came. Also thier customer service was incredible making sure i was happy with my order overall
William P. –
Went right into the lab refrigerator upon arrival, have not had time to research it yet but this company has delivered every time with great results
Steven F. –
Contaminated, so it's hard to give a good review. I've placed a few orders with you and most have been clean.
Not complaining as I know that it's impossible for 100% perfection in this hobby.

Jack Frost came in like a nor'easter! Once he settles in and the storm calms the fun begins. He stands in front of you bright white with blues so deep, so pronounced you could only see to believe. Feelings of childish joy rush through you as you begin to slip away into Jacks winter wonderland. You are amazed at what you are seeing, you can't believe your eyes! You're immersed in a kaleidoscope of snowflakes drifting by. You lay down and close your eyes. You drift even deeper into Jacks magic. Another adventure awaits you as the tunnel opens and you slide down the hill like a memory from childhood. Like any snowman Jack is no different. He begins to melt away and the adventure ends but the experience stays.
