Jack Frost is a pale Psilocybe cubensis hybrid commonly described with white caps and stems, upturned mature cap margins, and blue-to-gray gill coloration. It joins two well-known pale lineages in its reported history.
Lineage & history
Dave Wombat describes Jack Frost in his own retrospective account as an APE × TAT cross. That breeder attribution is consistent with the widely circulated lineage description. Precise release dates vary between secondary accounts and are not treated here as established.
Appearance & identifying traits
- Cap coloration: Pearly white to matte white; may develop a faint “frosted” or crystalline look
- Cap shape: Often convex when young, flattening with maturity; mature caps may show curled or upturned margins
- Stem: Chalky white, frequently thick/robust with a “frosted” appearance
- Gill coloration (notable trait): Gills can become bluish to steel-blue as the specimen matures, especially when handled or as bruising develops
- Veil remnants: Partial veil may leave an annular ring or remnants on the stipe (typical cubensis feature set)
- Bruising: Pronounced blue oxidation in response to handling or damage (a commonly cited hallmark of this variety)
Reported appearance varies between specimens. Mature cap, stem, gill, and spore traits are not structures present in a liquid-culture syringe.
Microscopy & pigmentation
- Spore print color (reference): Typically dark purplish-brown for P. cubensis; albino lines can sometimes show lighter-appearing deposition depending on phenotype and collection method
- Spore morphology (reference): Cubensis spores are generally sub-ellipsoid to ellipsoid
- Spore size (species-level reference): Often reported around ~11.5–17.3 × 8–11.5 µm for P. cubensis
- Gill structure (species-level): Crowded gills with adnate to adnexed attachment are typical of P. cubensis
The traits above describe mature reference specimens. Pale caps, faint spore deposits, and reduced spore production are separate observations and should not be used interchangeably.

Jack Frost itself, as well as separately named Jack Frost crosses, appears in the 2026 comparative study. Those are distinct sample labels; results for Jack Frost × Golden Teacher or Jack Frost × Shakti should not be substituted for the Jack Frost specimens. [2]

Jack Frost came in like a nor'easter! Once he settles in and the storm calms the fun begins. He stands in front of you bright white with blues so deep, so pronounced you could only see to believe. Feelings of childish joy rush through you as you begin to slip away into Jacks winter wonderland. You are amazed at what you are seeing, you can't believe your eyes! You're immersed in a kaleidoscope of snowflakes drifting by. You lay down and close your eyes. You drift even deeper into Jacks magic. Another adventure awaits you as the tunnel opens and you slide down the hill like a memory from childhood. Like any snowman Jack is no different. He begins to melt away and the adventure ends but the experience stays.
