Blue Meanie | Intense P. cubensis Genetics
Legendary cubensis genetics known for dramatic blue oxidation.
Blue Meanie (Cubensis) is a well-known Psilocybe cubensis variety prized by collectors and researchers for its thick, robust fruiting bodies and the striking deep-blue bruising reaction it exhibits when handled. Because “Blue Meanie” is also a common nickname for Panaeolus cyanescens, this listing refers specifically to the Psilocybe cubensis variety (not Pan Cyans).
Genetic Lineage & Historical Context
- Species: Psilocybe cubensis
- Lineage status: Classic cubensis cultivar (community-preserved genetics)
- Reported origin: Often associated with Australia in collector literature (sometimes nicknamed “thunder from down under”)
- Era of circulation: Frequently referenced in spore/culture catalogs by the late 1980s–1990s
- Name notes: “Blue Meanie” became pop-culture slang after the Beatles’ Yellow Submarine; in mycology circles it’s applied to multiple strongly blue-bruising species—hence the frequent confusion with Panaeolus cyanescens.
Because strain histories are largely community-sourced, origin details can vary by catalog. The key identifier here is that this is a P. cubensis variety with pronounced blue bruising—not the separate species P. cyanescens.
Visual Characteristics (Macro Morphology)
- Cap coloration: Golden to yellow-brown; may show pale/white speckling or veil remnants
- Cap shape: Convex when young, often flattening with maturity; an acute umbo (“nipple”) is sometimes reported
- Stem: Thick, sturdy stipe with a substantial “classic cube” look
- Veil remnants: Partial veil can leave an annular ring on the stem (typical cubensis trait)
- Bruising: Frequently noted for vivid, fast blue bruising/oxidation across cap and stem when tissue is damaged
Microscopy & Taxonomy Notes
- Spore print color: Dark purplish-brown (typical of P. cubensis)
- Basidia/spores: Subellipsoid spores, commonly observed on 4-spored basidia (standard cubensis microscopy profile)
- Gill structure: Crowded; attachment typically adnate to adnexed, shifting from pale gray when young to darker/purplish-black at maturity
- Research relevance: The pronounced injury-triggered blueing response is a useful comparative trait when documenting qualitative pigment reactions across cubensis varieties.
Research Notes (Educational Context)
Educational and descriptive context only.
- Blue bruising mechanism (general): In psilocybin-producing mushrooms, tissue injury can trigger enzymatic conversion of psilocybin to psilocin followed by oxidative coupling that forms blue oligomeric pigments.
- Potency language (reported): Frequently described in community literature as moderate to high, though alkaloid content varies widely by genetics and environment. Descriptions like “punchy,” “fast,” or “intense” are common but anecdotal.
- Analytical relevance: Often discussed in strain comparisons because the strong blueing reaction is visually obvious and can be used as a qualitative observation point in microscopy/taxonomy study notes.
Cultivation Characteristics (High-Level Overview)
- Difficulty: Commonly described as approachable for general cubensis research contexts
- Growth behavior: Often characterized in catalogs as vigorous/aggressive genetics
- Environmental tolerance: As with many classic cubensis lines, typically described as adaptable across a range of conditions
For safety and compliance, this section is descriptive only and excludes instructions, parameters, or cultivation techniques.

Name-Sharing & Comparison Lines We Carry
Few cubensis lines are as easy to confuse with another mushroom as this one. These comparisons make the difference clear:
- Hawaiian Panaeolus cyanescens (Pan Cyan) – the other “Blue Meanie,” a different genus with black spores; the single most useful side-by-side
- Golden Teacher – the cubensis reference baseline for comparing bruising intensity and build
- B+ (B Positive) – another classic cubensis line for comparing cap form and color
- Psilocybe azurescens – the species best known for intense blue bruising, for comparing oxidation response across species

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this Blue Meanie the same as Panaeolus cyanescens?
No, and this is the most common confusion around the name. This product is a Psilocybe cubensis cultivar. “Blue Meanie” is also used as a common name for Panaeolus cyanescens, an entirely different genus. If you are looking for the Panaeolus species, it is listed separately as our Hawaiian Panaeolus cyanescens.
Where does the Blue Meanie name come from?
The name refers to the dramatic blue oxidation the line shows when handled or damaged. In collector literature the cubensis Blue Meanie is often associated with Australia.
What is the difference between a liquid culture and a spore syringe?
A spore syringe carries spores suspended in solution. Spores are genetically varied and have to germinate before any mycelium exists, so what develops can differ from sample to sample. A liquid culture contains living mycelium from a single isolated genetic line that has already been grown out, so you are working with a known, consistent expression from the start and there is no germination stage. For microscopy and taxonomy work that means repeatable observation of the same genetics rather than a mixed population. Every culture we prepare is made in front of a scanned, 99.99% efficient HEPA filter.
How long will my liquid culture stay viable, and how should I store it?
We recommend using your culture within 2 months of receipt for best results. When stored properly it is covered by our 70-day viability guarantee, and properly stored cultures can remain viable for up to 12 months, although viability beyond 70 days is not guaranteed. Keep it refrigerated between 33-40°F and never allow it to freeze. Most cultures survive a single freeze-thaw cycle, but repeated freeze-thaw cycles will kill live mycelium.
What happens if my culture arrives contaminated or does not work?
Every batch is verified contamination-free before it ships, and your order is covered by our 70-Day Guarantee. If a culture arrives contaminated or fails to perform within that window, contact us and we will arrange a replacement or refund. Full terms are set out on our Refund & Replacement Policy page.
How can you tell the two Blue Meanies apart under the microscope?
Quickly. Blue Meanie cubensis drops a dark purple-brown print with smooth, subellipsoid spores. Panaeolus cyanescens drops a jet-black print with thick-walled, lemon-shaped spores, and its gills carry large thick-walled cystidia with crystal-encrusted tips. Either a spore print or a single slide settles the identification.
Has Blue Meanie cubensis been lab tested?
In competition rather than peer-reviewed work. A Blue Meanie cubensis sample entered as True Blue in the 2021 Psilocybin Cup was reported at 0.76% psilocybin and 0.06% psilocin, about 0.80% total tryptamines. That is a single sample, and results for any named line vary widely.
Why does Blue Meanie bruise so strongly?
The blue color in psilocybin mushrooms comes from psilocin oxidizing when tissue is damaged. Lines described as heavy bruisers, like Blue Meanie, show that reaction quickly and intensely, which is how the name is usually explained. How strongly a mushroom bruises reflects handling and condition as well as genetics, so it is best documented under consistent conditions.

Additional Information & Research Resources
Documented Origin & Disputed History
Blue Meanie cubensis is usually traced to Australia, where the original material is said to have been collected before being isolated into a standalone line. The origin of the name is less certain. Blue Meanies are the villains of the Beatles’ 1968 animated film Yellow Submarine, and in Australia the name had long been used for the small, black-spored Panaeolus cyanescens. One widely repeated theory is that the name crossed over when a cubensis line was sold under it, either by mistake or by borrowing an established nickname.
The result is that “Blue Meanie” now refers to two unrelated mushrooms in two different genera. This listing is the Psilocybe cubensis line. None of the origin accounts are formally documented, and we present them as the community records them.
Two Mushrooms, One Name
The difference between the two Blue Meanies is not subtle once you know what to look for. The cubensis line has the familiar cubensis build, with thicker stems, larger caps and a dark purple-brown print. Panaeolus cyanescens is small and slender, with a stem only a few millimeters thick, mottled gills and a jet-black print. Under the microscope the cubensis spores are subellipsoid, while Panaeolus spores are lemon-shaped and nearly opaque. For documentation work, always record the species rather than the common name.
What the Peer-Reviewed Genetics Show
No published study has sequenced Blue Meanie cubensis under that name, but population genomics offers context. McTaggart and colleagues, writing in Current Biology in 2023, found that cultivated P. cubensis lines are closely related and low in genetic diversity, and that cultivar names do not always reflect where the genetics came from. That caution applies with extra force to a line whose name was borrowed from a different mushroom altogether.
What Analytical Testing Shows
A Blue Meanie cubensis sample entered as True Blue in the 2021 Psilocybin Cup was reported at 0.76% psilocybin and 0.06% psilocin, about 0.80% total tryptamines. For context, a 2026 peer-reviewed study in the Journal of Fungi that grew 14 cubensis strains under identical conditions found totals ranging more than 7.8-fold, from 2.62 to 20.65 mg/g (about 0.26% to 2.1%), with individual fruiting bodies within one strain varying by 12.8 to 23.4 percent in psilocybin. Blue Meanie potency claims should be treated as unverified beyond that single sample.
Microscopy Reference Data
- Spore dimensions: within the normal P. cubensis range of roughly 11–17 x 7–12 micrometers; published Blue Meanie-specific measurements are not available
- Shape: subellipsoid, smooth-walled, no surface ornamentation; clearly different from the lemon-shaped spores of Panaeolus cyanescens
- Germ pore: truncate at the apical end, resolvable at 1000x oil immersion
- Pigmentation: dark purple-brown under transmitted light; print purple-brown rather than black
- Macro reference: classic cubensis build; several larger fruits followed by clusters of small to medium ones; strong, fast blue bruising on cap and stem
- Suggested workflow: 100x to confirm coverage, 400x for primary morphological observation, 1000x oil immersion for measurement and germ pore detail; run beside a Pan Cyan slide to see the two Blue Meanies side by side

Important Notice:
Once home, cubensis cultures should be kept in a fridge between 33-40°F to maximize their lifespan. We recommend using them within 2 months. Viability is guaranteed for 70 days when stored properly, and properly stored cultures can last up to 12 months, but this is not guaranteed.
Do not let your cultures freeze! While most will survive one freeze-thaw cycle, multiple freeze-thaw cycles will kill any live mycelium.

During my first Mycology journey, I found this website and was amazed to find how easy going the vendor is, heƒ??s laid back, nice, reliable and does everything he can to assure that everything runs smoothly. During my first purchase everything came quickly and without any problems but the second time I purchased a syringe it had a small leak.No worries though because when I messaged the vendor about the minor issue I faced he immediately offered me a replacement for the inconvenience which is outstanding. I could not ask for better customer service.
