Variety profile
Hillbilly Pumpkin
Hillbilly-derived selection · Bulbous caps · Orange-caramel tones
Hillbilly Pumpkin is a named Psilocybe cubensis selection recognized in community descriptions for rounded, bulbous caps and stout proportions. It is usually placed within the Hillbilly family.
Lineage & history
The parent Hillbilly name has a dated Arkansas attribution in a 2005 community discussion. [2] Later breeder descriptions associate the Pumpkin selection with Basidium Equilibrium. Attribution and development dates vary across retellings, so this is presented as a selected Hillbilly-associated form rather than a precisely dated, independently authenticated pedigree.
Appearance & identifying traits
- Overall form: Frequently squat and stout; “pumpkin” or “softball” proportions are commonly reported
- Cap shape: Rounded to convex, often appearing thick and bulbous; may look compressed compared to classic tall-fruiting cubes
- Cap coloration: Often orange-tan to caramel hues (can vary with phenotype and maturity)
- Stem: Thick, dense-looking stipe; commonly short-to-medium height relative to cap mass
- Veil remnants: Partial veil may leave annular remnants typical of P. cubensis
- Bruising: Blue oxidation upon handling or damage (typical of psilocybin-containing species)
Reported appearance varies between specimens. Mature cap, stem, gill, and spore traits are not structures present in a liquid-culture syringe.
Microscopy & pigmentation
- Spore print color: Dark purplish-brown (typical of P. cubensis)
- Gill structure: Crowded gills; attachment and spacing typical of P. cubensis (use standard cubensis ID references)
- What researchers like to document: The contrast between classic cubensis “tall & symmetrical” forms versus Hillbilly Pumpkin’s compact, bulbous phenotype
Research & genetic context
“Pumpkin” is a morphological nickname. It does not mean the fungus is associated with pumpkins as a host, and it is not evidence of a separate species. More specific names such as Whitebilly describe additional selections and should not be assumed to have the same pigmentation.
Reported characteristics
- Form: Rounded caps, orange-to-caramel coloration, and substantial stems are the commonly reported combination.
- Family distinction: Original Hillbilly, Hillbilly Pumpkin, and pale derivatives are separate labels.
- Evidence limit: No unique Pumpkin-specific genetic marker was established by the sources reviewed.
