Variety profile
Tidal Wave
PE × B+ reported hybrid · Variable morphology · TW2 family history
Tidal Wave is a Psilocybe cubensis hybrid label associated with Penis Envy × B+. Its history connects conventional cap-and-stem forms with the later TW2 / Enigma story.
Lineage & history
Reporting on the TW2 history credits Doma’s Tidal Wave work with the PE × B+ cross. The later Enigma name refers to an atypical folded form; the original Tidal Wave label should not be used as a synonym for every blob phenotype. [2]
Appearance & identifying traits
- Cap shape: Frequently convex-to-bell shaped when young, sometimes developing wavy or undulating margins as it matures
- Cap coloration: Tan to caramel-brown tones are commonly reported; pigmentation can vary by phenotype
- Stem: Often described as thicker, denser, and PE-leaning compared to many “standard” cubensis varieties
- Veil remnants: Partial veil may leave a defined annular ring/zone
- Bruising: Blue oxidation upon handling or damage
- Phenotype variability: Noted for irregular forms including “blob-like”/knotty growth and other atypical expressions in some lines
Reported appearance varies between specimens. Mature cap, stem, gill, and spore traits are not structures present in a liquid-culture syringe.
Microscopy & pigmentation
- Spore print color: Dark purplish-brown (typical of P. cubensis)
- Spore morphology (reported): Elliptical to subellipsoid spores are commonly described in microscopy-focused writeups
- Gill structure: Crowded gills beneath the cap are typical for cubensis; gill attachment can be adnate to adnexed depending on phenotype
Research & genetic context
Competition scores are measurements of submitted specimens, not a cultivar-wide standard. The 2026 study’s Enigma samples likewise cannot be treated as direct measurements of ordinary Tidal Wave material. Lineage association alone does not justify transferring an analytical result between the two. [3]
Reported characteristics
- Reported parentage: Penis Envy × B+.
- Visible variation: Wavy margins, thicker stems, and differing cap forms are commonly reported.
- Name distinction: Tidal Wave, TW2, and Enigma should be distinguished wherever the record allows.
