Hillbilly Selections & American Lines We Carry
Hillbilly is one of the best-known wild-found American lines, and it has already produced a selection of its own. These sit naturally beside it:
- Hillbilly Pumpkin – an isolation of Hillbilly’s stocky extreme, for documenting how much shape varies within the line
- Purple Mystic – a wild find from central Florida, for comparing two regional American collections
- Treasure Coast (TC) – a Florida-coast classic that, like Hillbilly, still carries a lot of natural variation
- Penis Envy (PE) – the other parent in Country Cock, one of the best-known Hillbilly crosses

Frequently Asked Questions
Where does Hillbilly originate?
Hillbilly is a classic American cubensis line, commonly referenced as originating from the Arkansas / Ozark region. It was popularized broadly through community circulation in the 2000s and 2010s and remains a staple reference line.
What is the difference between Hillbilly and Hillbilly Pumpkin?
Hillbilly Pumpkin is an isolation selected out of the Hillbilly line for a bulbous, compact “pumpkin” phenotype. Hillbilly is the broader parent line, showing the classic thick-stemmed, broad-capped form.
What is the difference between a liquid culture and a spore syringe?
A spore syringe carries spores suspended in solution. Spores are genetically varied and have to germinate before any mycelium exists, so what develops can differ from sample to sample. A liquid culture contains living mycelium from a single isolated genetic line that has already been grown out, so you are working with a known, consistent expression from the start and there is no germination stage. For microscopy and taxonomy work that means repeatable observation of the same genetics rather than a mixed population. Every culture we prepare is made in front of a scanned, 99.99% efficient HEPA filter.
How long will my liquid culture stay viable, and how should I store it?
We recommend using your culture within 2 months of receipt for best results. When stored properly it is covered by our 70-day viability guarantee, and properly stored cultures can remain viable for up to 12 months, although viability beyond 70 days is not guaranteed. Keep it refrigerated between 33-40°F and never allow it to freeze. Most cultures survive a single freeze-thaw cycle, but repeated freeze-thaw cycles will kill live mycelium.
What happens if my culture arrives contaminated or does not work?
Every batch is verified contamination-free before it ships, and your order is covered by our 70-Day Guarantee. If a culture arrives contaminated or fails to perform within that window, contact us and we will arrange a replacement or refund. Full terms are set out on our Refund & Replacement Policy page.
Who found Hillbilly?
Hillbilly is generally traced to a forager who posted as Hillbilly on the Mycotopia forum and is said to have collected it in Arkansas in the late 1990s or early 2000s. The line takes its name from that username. There is no formal record of the collection, so the account is best treated as community history.
Has Hillbilly been lab tested?
Yes, more than most named lines, though not in peer-reviewed work. As reported by DoubleBlind, a Hillbilly entry won the microdose category of the Spring 2022 Hyphae Cup at 4.93 mg/g total tryptamines, and independent lab testing of Hillbilly samples has been reported in a range of about 4 to 13 mg/g, averaging around 7 mg/g. That places it near the middle of the range for cubensis.
What do Hillbilly spores look like under the microscope?
Typical of the species: smooth, subellipsoid, dark purple-brown in transmitted light, with a truncate germ pore, and roughly 11 to 17 micrometers long by 7 to 12 wide. Hillbilly caps are described as releasing relatively few spores, so prints can be light, but spores can still be collected directly from the gills.

Additional Information & Research Resources
Documented Origin & Disputed History
Hillbilly is one of a small number of popular cubensis lines traced to a wild collection in the American South. It is generally credited to a forager who posted as Hillbilly on the Mycotopia forum and is said to have found it in Arkansas sometime in the late 1990s or early 2000s. The line kept its finder’s username as its name and spread steadily through hobbyist communities from there. As with most wild finds, the account comes from community history rather than formal documentation, and we present it as reported.
Hillbilly has since become a parent line in its own right. Reported crosses include Black Pearl, Hillbilly with TBC Nebula, and Country Cock, Hillbilly with Penis Envy, and its stocky phenotype was isolated as Hillbilly Pumpkin.
Two Phenotypes in One Line
Hillbilly is known for expressing at least two distinct forms: a stocky, chunky phenotype with thick stems and dense caps, which is the look most people associate with the name, and a taller phenotype with a wider canopy. Some fruiting bodies are reported to reach remarkable sizes. That range is a sign that Hillbilly still carries real variation from its wild origin, which makes it a good subject for documenting phenotype within one named line, and an isolated culture the reliable way to hold one form constant.
What the Peer-Reviewed Genetics Show
No published study has sequenced Hillbilly, but population genomics offers useful context. McTaggart and colleagues, writing in Current Biology in 2023, found that cultivated P. cubensis lines are closely related and low in genetic diversity compared with naturalized wild populations. A line taken directly from a wild population, as Hillbilly is reported to be, is the kind of material that can bring something to a library otherwise dominated by long-inbred cultivars.
What Analytical Testing Shows
Hillbilly has more published test results than most lines, though from competitions and independent labs rather than peer-reviewed studies. As reported by DoubleBlind, a Hillbilly entry won the microdose category of the Spring 2022 Hyphae Cup at 4.93 mg/g total tryptamines, and independent testing of Hillbilly samples has ranged from about 4 to 13 mg/g, averaging around 7 mg/g. For context, a 2026 peer-reviewed study in the Journal of Fungi that grew 14 cubensis strains under identical conditions found totals from 2.62 to 20.65 mg/g, with individual fruiting bodies within one strain varying by 12.8 to 23.4 percent in psilocybin. Hillbilly sits near the middle of that range.
Microscopy Reference Data
- Spore dimensions: within the normal P. cubensis range of roughly 11–17 x 7–12 micrometers; published Hillbilly-specific measurements are not available
- Shape: subellipsoid, smooth-walled, no surface ornamentation
- Germ pore: truncate at the apical end, resolvable at 1000x oil immersion
- Pigmentation: dark purple-brown under transmitted light; prints can be light because caps release relatively few spores
- Macro reference: two phenotypes, one stocky with thick stems and dense caps, one taller with a wider canopy; caramel to golden caps; blue bruising where handled
- Suggested workflow: 100x to confirm coverage, 400x for primary morphological observation, 1000x oil immersion for measurement and germ pore detail; swab gills directly if prints are light

Important Notice:
Once home, cubensis cultures should be kept in a fridge between 33-40°F to maximize their lifespan. We recommend using them within 2 months. Viability is guaranteed for 70 days when stored properly, and properly stored cultures can last up to 12 months, but this is not guaranteed.
Do not let your cultures freeze! While most will survive one freeze-thaw cycle, multiple freeze-thaw cycles will kill any live mycelium.

The shipping was great, but I’m just confused with the liquid culture. I’ve ordered some in the past with other companies and they seemed normal with it just being a merky white substance, but with “Hill Billies” it came with like 3 black dots in it. If it’s contaminated off the bat that’ll be crazy. Although I have heard that is normal with some liquid culture so I’m not sure. If I can get some more clearance about what it can be?, it’ll be very helpful for a clear of mind.
