Melmac Liquid Culture — a PE-family Psilocybe cubensis lineage (often referenced as “Homestead Penis Envy”) prepared under sterile lab conditions for microscopy & taxonomy research. Known in collector libraries for compact, thick-stemmed fruits and PE-style cap development that often remains more bulbous/closed than classic cubensis lines. Ultra Strong, Isolated Genetics. Superior to Spores. Guaranteed Successful Research. No Synthetics or Artificial Ingredients. We use a custom-formulated liquid culture with small amounts of specific bacterial peptones to promote stronger, denser, and more aggressive mycelial growth during research.

Variety profile

Melmac

Homestead PE association · Thick stems · Variable PE-family cap forms

Melmac is a named Psilocybe cubensis variety associated with the Penis Envy family and commonly called Homestead PE. Descriptions emphasize substantial stems and variable PE-like cap forms. The name preserves a community history, while individual selections can differ in their visible proportions.

Lineage & history

Species: Psilocybe cubensis. The variety name is an informal label within the species. Index Fungorum records Earle’s original name in 1906 and Singer’s current combination in 1948. [1]

The community compilation connects Melmak/Melmac with Homestead PE and attributes its later renaming and distribution to Alf. This is a retrospective lineage account, not an authenticated record proving identity with the earliest PE material. [2]

Melmac and Melmak are spelling variants encountered in lineage discussions. More specific labels such as Melmak 118, Melmak TP, and Melmak Revert refer to separately named selections; their traits should not automatically be assigned to every Melmac culture.

Appearance & identifying traits

  • Cap development: PE-style bulbous/underdeveloped caps are commonly reported, sometimes remaining partially closed
  • Stem (stipe): Thick, dense, and substantial compared to many “classic” cubensis varieties
  • Overall build: Compact / “squat” proportions are frequently noted within Melmac-derived phenotypes
  • Coloration: Typically golden-brown caps and pale stipes, consistent with PE-family presentations
  • Bruising: Blue oxidation upon handling or damage (a common characteristic across psilocybin-containing Psilocybe)

These are descriptions of mature mushroom morphology. They describe reference traits, not structures present in a liquid-culture syringe; appearance alone does not authenticate a named variety.

Microscopy & pigmentation

  • Species-typical spore coloration: Dark purplish-brown; this describes deposited spores, not the appearance of a liquid culture.
  • Species-typical gill attachment: Commonly described as adnate to adnexed.
  • Reported PE-family feature: Spore deposition can be reduced, but it should be documented for the specimen rather than assumed from the family name.

Lenz and colleagues linked injury-related blueing in cubensis tissue to enzyme-mediated oxidation. This is distinct from baseline cap pigmentation and does not supply a quantitative chemical assay or cultivar identification. [4]

Research & genetic context

The 2023 study examines domestication and relatedness among cubensis cultivars. Its findings about named populations cannot establish that a Melmac sample is identical to a PE reference genome. [3]

For comparative research, the useful distinction is between a reported family relationship and a measured relationship between particular specimens. A PE-family label alone cannot establish a unique genetic marker, a fixed morphology, or a cultivar-wide chemical profile.

Reported characteristics

  • Common aliases: Homestead PE, Melmac PE, and Melmak; naming varies between collections.
  • Morphological range: Thick stems and compact caps are common descriptions, but more expanded or irregular caps also occur in material circulated under Melmac-related names.
  • Sporulation terminology: Reports of reduced spore deposition do not establish sterility; spore abundance and reproductive capacity are different observations.

Liquid culture & care

  • Established genetics: derived from a preserved, domesticated PE-family lineage
  • Cleaner observation: minimal extraneous material for microscopy prep – Made in front of a scanned, 99.99% efficient HEPA filter
  • Reliable morphology: ideal for repeated comparative study
