Koh Samui Super Strain (KSSS) | Thai P. cubensis Genetics
A famous island lineage refined for bold, squat morphology.
Koh Samui Super Strain (KSSS) is a well-known Psilocybe cubensis variety tied to Koh Samui, a tropical island in Thailand. In collector and research circles it’s often referenced as an isolated, “super strain” selection from Koh Samui genetics—recognized for its thick, stocky stems, broad caps, and consistently chunky fruiting-body form that makes it a standout for morphology comparison and microscopy-focused study.
Genetic Lineage & Historical Context
- Species: Psilocybe cubensis
- Lineage status: Thai island lineage; commonly circulated as a refined Koh Samui selection (“Super Strain”), often abbreviated as KSSS (also seen as “Thai 2” in some catalogs)
- Origin attribution: Koh Samui, Thailand; broadly credited to ethnomycological collections and subsequent circulation tied to John W. Allen’s Thailand work
KSSS is frequently described as a “selected” or “refined” Koh Samui line—valued for visual consistency and the distinctive squat, thick-stem phenotype used in comparative observation.
Visual Characteristics (Macro Morphology)
- Overall profile: Short-to-medium stature with notably thick, sturdy stems (“stumpy” / stocky appearance)
- Cap shape: Broad, often saucer-like caps at maturity; convex when young, flattening as it develops
- Cap coloration: Typical cubensis tan-to-caramel tones, with variation by maturity and environmental conditions
- Veil remnants: Partial veil often leaves an annular ring on the stipe
- Bruising: Blue oxidation can occur with handling or damage (typical of psilocybin-producing species)
Microscopy & Taxonomy Notes
- Spore print color: Dark purplish-brown (typical of P. cubensis)
- Gill structure: Crowded gills with adnate to adnexed attachment (species-typical)
- Why KSSS is favored: The robust, squat morphology and repeatable “chunky” phenotype make it useful for side-by-side morphological comparison against classic and modern lines
Research Notes (Educational Context)
Educational and descriptive context only.
- Potency (reported): Commonly described as average to above-average in anecdotal strain literature (reports vary widely)
- Common descriptive language: “Strong,” “clear,” and “visual” are frequent descriptors in anecdotal reports, though these are subjective and not a substitute for chemical analysis
- Analytical relevance: Often discussed as a stable Thai cubensis reference with a distinctive phenotype that is easy to recognize in comparative morphology work
Cultivation Characteristics (High-Level Overview)
- Difficulty: Frequently described as resilient genetics in hobbyist literature
- Growth behavior: Often characterized as vigorous and prone to dense, clustered fruits (descriptive only)
- Environmental tolerance: Commonly noted for stability and consistency across repeated observation attempts
For safety and compliance, this section is descriptive only and excludes instructions, parameters, or cultivation techniques.
Collector & Researcher Highlights
- Thai lineage classic: A widely circulated Koh Samui-derived variety with recognizable morphology
- Study-friendly phenotype: Thick stems + broad caps make macro traits easy to document
- Abbreviation: Commonly referred to as KSSS
Why liquid culture over spores (for research):
- Established genetics: derived from a stable, well-documented lineage
- Cleaner observation: minimal extraneous material for microscopy prep – Made in front of a scanned, 99.99% efficient HEPA filter
- Reliable morphology: ideal for repeated comparative study
- Shelf Life: 9-12 Months (Refrigerated DO NOT FREEZE)

Add Koh Samui Super Strain (KSSS) to your genetic library and explore one of the most distinctive Thai P. cubensis phenotypes in modern research.
Important Notice:
Once home, cubensis cultures should be kept in a fridge between 33-40°F to maximize their lifespan of 6-12 months.
Do not let your cultures freeze! While most will survive one freeze-thaw cycle, multiple freeze-thaw cycles will kill any live mycelium.

Maybe I got a bad sample but I havenƒ??t had any success with this particular sample. Fast shipping though

Arrived fast, packaged really well! I'm stoked to study these KSSS further!

Bad batch, but when I emailed Cube Cultures I was sent 3 extra free 10cc liquid cultures of some awesome strains that I was unable to find: every company had its hookups, what matters is how they resolve the issue. And Cube Cultures were more than accommodating. We have been in communication about business, mycology, and making sure I was happy with my cultures. When I noticed one was no good. The same night I sent a email out explaining this. I had 3 new liquid culture batches sent to me same night!!!

Itƒ??s been over a week and no growth

Everything was prepared as the proven usual procedure but still experienced tricho at the injection area. Tried email three times with no response.
