Treasure Coast | Florida-Coast P. cubensis Genetics

A prolific coastal lineage prized for observation and comparison.

Treasure Coast (TC) is a widely circulated Psilocybe cubensis variety associated with Florida’s “Treasure Coast” region and nearby Gulf/Atlantic coastal habitats. Collectors often describe TC as vigorous and productive, with classic cubensis coloration (golden-to-caramel caps) and frequent, pronounced blue bruising—an oxidation response commonly associated with active Psilocybe species.

Genetic Lineage & Context

  • Species: Psilocybe cubensis
  • Lineage status: Regional/landrace-derived cubensis variety in long-term circulation
  • Origin association: Florida “Treasure Coast” / southern Florida coastal region

Treasure Coast is frequently referenced as a classic regional cubensis line with strong performance traits and occasional pale/leucistic expressions reported by collectors.

Visual Characteristics (Macro Morphology)

  • Cap coloration: Light golden to caramel-brown, sometimes paling toward straw-yellow with maturity
  • Cap shape: Convex when young; may broaden and become wavy or slightly uplifted at the edges as it matures
  • Stem: Typically pale to white; often described as slender-to-medium with clustered growth in many observations
  • Veil remnants: Partial veil can leave an annular ring or fragmenting veil tissue on the stem
  • Bruising: Blue oxidation upon handling or tissue damage is commonly reported

Microscopy & Taxonomy Notes

  • Spore print color: Dark purplish-brown (typical of P. cubensis)
  • Gill structure: Crowded gills that darken as spores mature; attachment patterns vary within typical cubensis ranges
  • Comparative use: Often kept in genetic libraries for baseline comparison against newer hybrids and phenotype isolates (including leucistic derivatives)

Research Notes (Educational Context)

Educational and descriptive context only.

  • Potency (reported): Commonly described as average to above-average within P. cubensis, with significant batch-to-batch variation
  • Common descriptive language: “Energetic,” “uplifting,” and “visual” are frequently cited in anecdotal literature, but reports vary
  • Analytical relevance: Useful as a comparative reference in discussions of regional cubensis lines and phenotype selection (e.g., pale/leucistic offshoots)

Cultivation Characteristics (High-Level Overview)

  • Difficulty: Generally described as resilient / beginner-friendly genetics
  • Growth behavior: Often reported as vigorous and prolific across multiple fruiting cycles
  • Environmental tolerance: Frequently described as adaptable, consistent with many classic cubensis lines

For safety and compliance, this section is descriptive only and excludes instructions, parameters, or cultivation techniques.

Florida & Classic Companion Lines We Carry

Treasure Coast is one of several cubensis lines with Florida roots, and one of the classics most often named in the scientific literature. These sit naturally beside it:

  • Purple Mystic – a more recent wild find from central Florida, for comparing two Florida-origin lines
  • B+ (B Positive) – another Florida-associated classic, and the line most tied to the grower some rumors also connect with Treasure Coast
  • Golden Teacher – the species reference baseline for classic morphology
  • Z-Strain – another long-circulating classic with a debated origin, useful as a second baseline

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does Treasure Coast originate?

Treasure Coast is associated with Florida’s “Treasure Coast” region and nearby Atlantic and Gulf coastal habitats. It is a regional, landrace-derived cubensis line in long-term circulation.

What is the leucistic Treasure Coast?

Collectors have long reported occasional pale or leucistic expressions appearing within Treasure Coast. Those reports are what inspired the separate leucistic Treasure Coast lines in circulation today; standard TC shows the classic golden-to-caramel coloration.

What is the difference between a liquid culture and a spore syringe?

A spore syringe carries spores suspended in solution. Spores are genetically varied and have to germinate before any mycelium exists, so what develops can differ from sample to sample. A liquid culture contains living mycelium from a single isolated genetic line that has already been grown out, so you are working with a known, consistent expression from the start and there is no germination stage. For microscopy and taxonomy work that means repeatable observation of the same genetics rather than a mixed population. Every culture we prepare is made in front of a scanned, 99.99% efficient HEPA filter.

How long will my liquid culture stay viable, and how should I store it?

We recommend using your culture within 2 months of receipt for best results. When stored properly it is covered by our 70-day viability guarantee, and properly stored cultures can remain viable for up to 12 months, although viability beyond 70 days is not guaranteed. Keep it refrigerated between 33-40°F and never allow it to freeze. Most cultures survive a single freeze-thaw cycle, but repeated freeze-thaw cycles will kill live mycelium.

What happens if my culture arrives contaminated or does not work?

Every batch is verified contamination-free before it ships, and your order is covered by our 70-Day Guarantee. If a culture arrives contaminated or fails to perform within that window, contact us and we will arrange a replacement or refund. Full terms are set out on our Refund & Replacement Policy page.

Who found Treasure Coast?

The original collector is not known. The line is named for the Treasure Coast region on Florida’s Atlantic shore, and it entered wider circulation around 1999 to 2000, when it was carried by a long-time Shroomery moderator known as Mr. Hawk. Some online accounts connect it to Mr. G, the grower associated with B+, but that link is disputed.

Why does Treasure Coast sometimes produce white fruits?

Growers have long reported occasional leucistic, pale fruits in later flushes of Treasure Coast. The cause has not been studied, but it fits a line that still carries a lot of natural variation. Those pale fruits helped inspire the albino and leucistic Treasure Coast selections that circulate today.

What do Treasure Coast spores look like under the microscope?

Typical of the species: smooth, subellipsoid, dark purple-brown in transmitted light, with a truncate germ pore, and roughly 11 to 17 micrometers long by 7 to 12 wide. Because the line varies more than many classics, it is worth measuring spores from more than one fruit if you are building a reference set.

Additional Information & Research Resources

Documented Origin & Disputed History

Treasure Coast is named for the stretch of Florida’s Atlantic coast running roughly from Vero Beach down toward Jupiter, cattle and pasture country where wild cubensis has long been found. Who first collected it is not recorded. The line entered wider circulation around 1999 to 2000, when it was carried by the long-time Shroomery moderator known as Mr. Hawk, and it has been a hobby staple ever since. Some online accounts credit Mr. G, the grower associated with B+, but that attribution is disputed.

Unlike most modern lines, Treasure Coast is still widely described as close to a wild population rather than a tightly bred cultivar. Growers report fruit sizes from a few inches to around a foot, variable colonization and occasional pale fruits in later flushes. We present the history as the community records it rather than as settled fact.

What the Peer-Reviewed Genetics Show

Treasure Coast is one of the few named cultivars discussed directly in published population genomics. McTaggart and colleagues, writing in Current Biology in 2023, named it alongside Golden Teacher, Penis Envy, B+ and McKennaii as one of the best-known commercial cultivars. Their kinship analysis found that Treasure Coast isolates, along with Penis Envy and cultivars from Thailand, had evidence of sibling relationships, meaning they may have been established from a single parent mushroom or propagated clonally.

In plain language: despite its reputation for variability, the Treasure Coast material in circulation appears to descend from a very small starting point, possibly one mushroom. The variation growers see is the reshuffling of a limited set of genes rather than broad wild diversity. That is exactly why isolating one clone matters for consistent study of this line.

What Analytical Testing Shows

There is no published controlled data on Treasure Coast, and it is generally regarded as average for the species. In coverage by DoubleBlind, Hyphae Labs’ Tomás Garrett reported that of more than 1,000 psilocybin mushroom samples he had tested, about 80 percent measured under 10 mg/g, with results across cubensis strains ranging from about 3 to 30 mg/g. A 2026 peer-reviewed study in the Journal of Fungi that grew 14 cubensis strains under identical conditions found totals from 2.62 to 20.65 mg/g, with individual fruiting bodies within one strain varying by 12.8 to 23.4 percent in psilocybin. Treasure Coast potency claims should be treated as unverified until specific testing exists.

Microscopy Reference Data

  • Spore dimensions: within the normal P. cubensis range of roughly 11–17 x 7–12 micrometers; published Treasure Coast-specific measurements are not available
  • Shape: subellipsoid, smooth-walled, no surface ornamentation
  • Germ pore: truncate at the apical end, resolvable at 1000x oil immersion
  • Pigmentation: dark purple-brown under transmitted light; occasional pale fruits may give lighter prints
  • Macro reference: golden caps; fruit size highly variable, from a few inches to around a foot tall; classic cubensis build with a ring zone; blue bruising where handled
  • Suggested workflow: 100x to confirm coverage, 400x for primary morphological observation, 1000x oil immersion for measurement and germ pore detail; sample more than one fruit when building a reference set

Important Notice:

Once home, cubensis cultures should be kept in a fridge between 33-40°F to maximize their lifespan. We recommend using them within 2 months. Viability is guaranteed for 70 days when stored properly, and properly stored cultures can last up to 12 months, but this is not guaranteed. Do not let your cultures freeze! While most will survive one freeze-thaw cycle, multiple freeze-thaw cycles will kill any live mycelium.
