Mushrooms on the menu
Common edible varieties such as button, oyster, and shiitake mushrooms provide different combinations of B vitamins and minerals, including copper. Nutrient content varies by species and preparation; “mushrooms” are not one uniform food. USDA nutrient analysis
A useful vitamin D distinction
Mushrooms exposed to ultraviolet light can contain higher levels of vitamin D₂. Not every package contains the same amount, so check the nutrition label rather than assuming all mushrooms are a rich source. NIH vitamin D fact sheet
Mushrooms also contain compounds such as ergothioneine and beta-glucans that interest researchers. Finding a compound in a food, however, does not by itself establish that eating it prevents disease. Four familiar names, different evidence
“Functional mushroom” is a broad label, not proof of a particular health effect. Findings from an isolated compound or a specific extract should not be automatically applied to a tea, gummy, powder, or a different species.
Lion’s mane
Hericium erinaceus
A small placebo-controlled trial published in 2009 reported improved cognitive scores during treatment in adults with mild cognitive impairment. This is an interesting signal, not evidence that lion’s mane prevents dementia or reliably improves everyone’s memory. Read the clinical trial
Reishi
Ganoderma lucidum
A Cochrane review of five small cancer trials found insufficient evidence to justify reishi as a first-line cancer treatment; effects on long-term survival remained uncertain. Laboratory immune or tumor findings are not the same as a proven clinical benefit. Read the evidence review
Turkey tail
Trametes versicolor
PSK, a preparation derived from turkey tail, has been studied alongside conventional cancer treatments, particularly in Japan. Those findings do not establish that retail turkey-tail supplements have the same effects. The National Cancer Institute notes that turkey tail and PSK are not FDA-approved treatments for cancer. Chaga
Inonotus obliquus
An antioxidant measurement in a laboratory is not a clinical outcome. Chaga also deserves caution: published case reports describe serious kidney injury associated with prolonged consumption of oxalate-rich chaga powder. “Natural” does not mean risk-free. Read the kidney-injury case report

Psilocybin: encouraging findings, important limits
Psilocybin studies typically combine a measured investigational treatment with participant screening and psychological support. These conditions matter. The results cannot be treated as evidence that a mushroom strain, research culture, or unsupervised experience will produce the same medical outcome.
A larger randomized trial
A trial involving 104 adults with major depressive disorder found greater improvement in depression symptoms with psilocybin plus psychological support than with an active placebo over six weeks. The study excluded several higher-risk groups, including people with a history of psychosis or mania. Its findings are promising but do not establish suitability for everyone. JAMA clinical trial
What longer follow-up adds
A randomized study of 35 participants found a greater reduction in clinician-rated depression scores at day 8 and day 42, but no statistically significant difference between groups on that measure at one year. Two participants in the psilocybin group experienced persistent, severe anxiety requiring medical attention. A promising, condition-specific result
In a randomized trial whose main analysis included 93 participants, psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy was associated with fewer heavy-drinking days than active placebo plus psychotherapy across 32 weeks. This supports further investigation; it does not prove that psilocybin treats every substance-use disorder or replaces established care. JAMA Psychiatry clinical trial
Small studies have also explored distress associated with serious illness. Evidence from one diagnosis should not be transferred to PTSD, opioid dependence, or another condition without suitable trials. Microdosing’s safety and effectiveness remain uncertain. NCCIH overview
How to read a research headline
Look for a comparison group, study size, adverse events, and follow-up duration—not just a striking percentage. Psychedelic effects can make treatment assignment easy to guess, which complicates blinding. Questions remain about durability, interactions, and how well trial protocols translate into routine care. Curiosity works best with caution
- Food, supplements, and medicines are different. Research involving a standardized extract is not a guarantee for every commercial product.
- Do not replace prescribed care. Discuss supplements and potential interactions with a qualified healthcare professional, especially during cancer treatment.
- Psilocybin has real risks. Effects can include panic, nausea, increased blood pressure, and serious psychiatric reactions. Screening and trained support are essential parts of clinical studies.
- Do not self-identify wild mushrooms for consumption. Toxic look-alikes can cause fatal poisoning.
